Social capital in wonderland

the World Bank behind the looking glass

Ben Fine

Department of Economics, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, London, UK

Whilst, from their internally privileged position, the World Bank's social capitalists have defended their use and heavy promotion of social capital within the Bank as a strategy for civilizing the Bank's economists, this is shown to have been both a flawed strategy and one that misreads both the internal dynamic of the Bank and its external influence.

Key Words: Social capital • World Bank • knowledge bank
